A Quick Review; the Fundamentals of Novel Drug Delivery System (NDDS)

Novel Drug Delivery System

A novel drug delivery system refers to the formulations, approaches, systems, and technologies for transporting a pharmaceutical compound in the body to achieve its desired therapeutic effects. Slow processing, as well as side effects, of traditional drug therapy are contributing to the emergence of the concept of novel drug delivery systems. Ideas based on interdisciplinary approaches controlling the efficiency, bio-recognition, pharmacokinetics, immunogenicity, and pharmacodynamics of drugs were generated.

A novel drug delivery system helps increase the availability of drugs, reduce drug degradation, and prevent harmful side effects of drugs. The system enables the formulation of the novel drug delivery devices to incorporate the drug molecules into the new delivery system, providing various commercial and therapeutic benefits. Moreover, novel drug delivery systems are used to manufacture medicines that may one day be available for medical use.

As the medical world continues to grow more demanding, innovative, and complicated, the systems required to make these medicines are becoming increasingly complex and often tested in vitro to ensure the safety of the final product. However, with the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, the demand for novel drug delivery systems is also increasing. For instance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease are the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S.

Moreover, there has been a significant increase in the adoption of novel drug delivery systems due to various factors such as the expiration of existing international patents, the prohibitive cost of developing new drug entities, and the improvement in therapeutic efficiency. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize the field of drug discovery. It can be used to help speed up the drug discovery process, find better target proteins, and find new medical approaches to common problems such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
