Fenitrothion (metallic sulfate) is an environmentally safe and effective insecticide that is applied to the foliage, stem, fruits, and even seeds of a wide range of aquatic plants, including water hyacinth and pond algae. Most trade names under this category are Fenitrothion, a patented phosphorothioate Sulfate insecticide. Other trade names under the same category are Metronidazole, Fluconazole, and Nylar. The active ingredient in each of these products is the same: sulfate. Fenitrothion belongs to the family of surfactants or reactants that include the commonly used chlorine bleach, the sulfate-free, and chlorinated hydroquinone, and the proparglutin-based mothballs.

Growing global population leading to high demand for food products is expected to drive growth of the global fenitrothion market. According to the World Bank, the global population reached 7.674 billion in 2019, increasing from 6.84 billion in 2009. According to the United Nations (UN), the global population is expected to reach over 9.7 billion by 2050 with an urban population reaching over 6.7 billion.
