Ammonium Thiosulphate Fertilizer Market Is Growing With Increasing Food Demand
Ammonium thiosulphate is used to manufacture liquid fertilizers that are widely used in the agriculture industry. These fertilizers include two main elements such as Sulfur and Nitrogen, which helps increase nitrogen efficiency and also helps crops in protein synthesis of different proteins, increasing the yield of the crops. The ammonium thiosulphate fertilizer market is growing with increasing food demand across the world. The global demand for food is expected to increase by 70% by 2050.
According to the
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, overall food production needs to increase by
70% to sustain a population of 9.1 billion, from 2005/07 to 2050. Ammonium thiosulphate fertilizers
widely used for many row crops such as wheat, beans, millet, cotton, corn, soybean,
and maize, among others in combination with other liquid fertilizers. Moreover,
ammonium thiosulphate fertilizers find a wide variety of applications in
vegetable crops such as melon, tomato, eggplant, cabbage, spinach, etc. Other
applications include trees, vines, and alfalfa.
Moreover, the demand for ammonium thiosulphate from the
fertilizers industry, especially in the Asia Pacific region, has increased over
the past few years, which may drive the ammonium thiosulphate fertilizer market
growth. According to the FAO, the global fertilizer nutrients forecasts are
187.7 million Mt and 223.1 million Mt for 2015 and 2030, respectively. Asia is
expected to account for about 40% of the global forecast of 187.7 million Mt in
2015 and 223.1 million Mt in 2030.
However, excessive use of chemical fertilizers leads to soil
degradation, which may restrain the ammonium thiosulphate fertilizer market growth.
Furthermore, factors such as the growing adoption of organic fertilizers due to
increasing consumption of organic food and favorable government initiatives or subsidies
for the adoption of organic farming may hamper the ammonium thiosulphate
fertilizer market growth. For instance, the European government has set out a
30% budget for supporting organic farming under the rural development program.
With the increasing demand for food grains and vegetables
due to increasing population worldwide, especially in the Asia Pacific, the
demand for ammonium thiosulphate is also increasing, which may boost the ammonium thiosulphate fertilizer market growth. According to the United Nations, the
world's population is expected to increase by 2 billion persons in the next 30
years, from 7.7 billion currently to 9.7 billion in 2050. Thus, fertilizers are
required to increase the productivity of crops to serve rising population.
