Biodegradable Tableware Market Witnessing Upward Trend with Increasing Preference for Biodegradable Materials
Biodegradable tableware are eco-friendly containers for food and beverages. These days, there is an increased need for biodegradable materials, with an increasing number of people preferring eco-friendly options for various purposes. It has become highly important in today's society due to the increasing concerns on landfill space and the negative impact of plastic on the environment, particularly on our landfills. Such concerns are expected to aid in growth of the biodegradable tableware market.
Use
of conventional plastic as mentioned above may lead to adverse environmental
effects. This in turn has prompted various governments to ban use of plastic,
which aids in growth of the biodegradable tableware market. In October 2019,
the Government of India launched initiative to reduce use of conventional
plastic. India is also witnessing R&D in manufacturing biodegradable
tableware. In February 2021, CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary
Science and Technology reported development of a technology for manufacturing
100% biodegradable tableware, including dishes and cups, from wheat bran. Ban
on plastic has also prompted R&D of new biodegradable materials. In October
2020, LG Chem developed a new biodegradable material that can be used for
plastic bags, air cap buffers, disposable cups and foaming products because of
improved flexibility and transparency.
The
biodegradable tableware market is also driven by increasing funding for R&D
in biodegradable alternatives to traditional petrochemical plastic. In October
2020, the United Soybean Board awarded Danimer Scientific, a developer and
manufacturer of biodegradable materials, a US$ 350,000 grant to investigate the
use of high-oleic soybean oil (HOSO) in the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate
(PHA), a biodegradable alternative to traditional petrochemical plastic. The
market is also witnessing R&D in biodegradable plastics. In September 2019,
Total Corbion PLA introduced bio-degradable plastic in India. In December 2018,
the company started a new PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) bio-plastics plant in Rayong,
Thailand.
In
the U.S., various states are implementing stringent regulations to
mitigate the impact of conventional plastic on the environment, which is
expected to offer lucrative growth opportunities for players in the biodegradable tableware market. In
October 2019, various cities in the U.S. such as San Francisco and Seattle
banned the use of single-use conventional plastic. The Covid-19 pandemic impacted the dine-in business in
the hospitality sector. There is an increasing shift with a number of quick
service restaurants adopting eco-friendly solutions. This has prompted players
in the biodegradable tableware market to focus on developing products for food
delivery sector.
