The Emergence of COVID-19 to Hamper the Clomiphene Citrate Market Growth
Clomiphene, or Clomifene, is a medicine widely used to treat infertility in women, including those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Clomiphene citrate is taken by mouth once a day during treatment, which usually lasts for five days. PCOS, multiple miscarriages, obesity, and age are some of the most common cause of female infertility. Infertility is a global health issue, as its affects both men and women. Growth of the clomiphene citrate market is mainly driven by the increasing rate of infertility worldwide in both men and women. According to the Indian Journal of Community Medicine, infertility affects 8 to 10% of couples worldwide.
Of which, around 60 to 80 million couples suffering from
infertility every year worldwide, probably between 15 and 20 million (25%) are
in India alone. Moreover, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), in the United States, around 6% of married women, aged 15 to
44 years, are unable to get pregnant after one year of trying (infertility).
Also, about 12% of women, aged 15 to 44 years, have difficulty getting pregnant
or carrying a pregnancy to term, regardless of marital status (impaired
fecundity). Thus, with the increasing rate of infertility, the demand for clomiphene
citrate is also increasing rapidly, which, in turn, is expected to accelerate clomiphene citrate market growth.
However, the COVID-19 outbreak has hindered the demand for
clomiphene citrate. According the American Society for Reproductive Medicine,
those who are under treatment of clomiphene for infertility, tests positive for
COVID-19, must suspend the treatment, as well as other fertility treatments.
Moreover, clomiphene citrate is not recommended for women whose ovaries no
longer produce eggs properly. Chloramiphene, Chloramifene, Clomifene, and
Clomid are some common names of clomiphene citrate. It is an oral medication
that is often used to treat certain types of infertility in females.
Furthermore, the clomiphene citrate market is witnessing
robust growth due to the increasing incidence of polycystic ovarian syndrome
(PCOS) worldwide. PCOS is also a common and treatable cause of infertility.
According to the United States Department of Health & Human Services, PCOS
is a health problem that affects 1 in 10 women of childbearing age. However, there
are some side effects of clomiphene citrate, such as ovarian hyper-stimulation
syndrome, dizziness, redness, injection site pain, vomiting, abnormal bleeding,
pelvic discomfort, weight gain, nausea, headache, and upper respiratory tract
infection, which may also restrain growth of the clomiphene citrate market.
