 Empty capsules are stable shells containing encapsulate drugs, which are administered in a wide variety of dosage forms. These capsules are used for drug products constituting of dry, liquids, semi-solids, and miniature pellets or powdered ingredients. Pullulan (polysaccharide polymer consisting of maltotriose units), Starch Materials, Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose, Fish Bone Gelatin, Type-B Gelatin (Animal Bones and Calf Skin), and Type-A Gelatin (Pork Skin) are some raw materials required for manufacturing of empty capsules.

Empty capsules are of two types, such as gelatin capsules and non-gelatin capsules. Empty capsules are made in two halves; a lower-diameter body that is filled and then sealed using a higher-diameter cap. Hard capsules are made of gelatin derived from animal skins and bones, and are used for encapsulation of dry, liquids, semi-solids, and miniature pellets or powdered ingredients. Whereas non-gelatin/vegetarian/vegetable capsules) are made of hypromellose, a polymer formulated from cellulose and other polysaccharides.

Empty capsules are useful in masking the taste of cardiac therapy drugs. This prevents the patient from feeling nauseated. A 000 (triple zero) capsule is the largest size available. In cases where capsule sizes are indicated with 0 names, 000s are the largest, while 0s are smaller. However, the most popular empty capsules available today are the sizes 00, holds about 735 mg. Moreover, empty capsules allow the user to fill powders at desired potencies and avoid tablet binders and fillers.
