Laser Cladding Materials Market Witnessing Significant Growth in the Asia Pacific
Laser cladding is a technique for adding one material to the surface of another. The process allows for improved properties for the surface of a part, including improved wear resistance, as well as allowing for the repair of damaged or worn surfaces. Laser cladding provides a faster, economical, and eco-friendly alternative for coating surfaces when compared to traditional laser metal deposition (LMD), thermal spraying, and hard chrome plating. For instance, in August 2020, Bilsing Automation announced the implementation of EHLA, a laser cladding process using high-speed LMD that helps protect components from corrosion and wear.
Thus, the laser cladding materials market is experiencing
significant growth due to increasing application in various end-user industries,
such as oil and gas, power, construction, mining, petrochemicals, and others.
This is primarily due to advantages of laser cladding which include its ability
of cladding selective smaller areas and great flexibility during processing. For
instance, in August 2019, Höganäs launched new surface welding powders, Rockit
606 and Rockit 706, to combat impact and abrasive wear to prolong component
lifetime in tough wear environments. Rockit 606 and Rockit 706 are suitable for
applications in the construction, mining, and oil and gas and industries.
The laser cladding materials market is expected to witness substantial
growth in Asia Pacific, owing to rapid growth of end-use industries in the
region. According the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), India is expected
to become the third largest construction market by 2022. Moreover, India plans
to spend around US$ 1.4 trillion on infrastructure projects for sustainable
development in the country. End-use industries, such as automobile and power
generation are increasingly adopting laser cladding techniques over
conventional methods to increase wear and corrosion resistance of the plant
equipment. This scenario is expected to augment the laser cladding materials
market growth.
The increasing adoption of laser cladding is rapidly
replacing conventional technologies such as thermal spray, metal inert gas
welding (MIG), oven sintering, hexavalent hard chrome plating, and high-velocity
oxy-fuel since these technologies are relatively time-consuming and have lower
metal cladding efficiency. This will subsequently increase the need for modern technology
equipment, fuelling the laser cladding materials market growth. Due to the
increasing demand, market players are adopting various inorganic strategies to
meet increasing demand and to strengthen their product portfolio. For instance,
in January 2021, NUBURU added seven new patents to its intellectual property
(IP) portfolio in visible laser technologies with applications across 3D
printing and materials processing.
