Active and Modified Atmosphere Packaging Market Is On Continuous Rise Due to Rapid Growth of the Food and Beverages Industry
Active and modified atmosphere packaging is considered as a new solution for food packaging. It is a smart and intelligent packaging solution used to pack fresh-cut fruits and vegetables and to enhance the shelf-life of food products. Advancements in packaging, such as self-venting microwave packs, respiring trays, and other packaging solutions are contributing to the active and modified atmospheric packaging market growth. For instance, in February 2019, Air Products launched new scented modified atmosphere packaging in the United Kingdom. Active and modified atmosphere packaging find application across processed food products, bakery and confectionery, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, poultry and seafood, meat, and others.
Growth of the active and modified atmosphere packagin gmarket is majorly driven by the rapid growth of the food and beverage industry
and increasing demand for processed food around the globe. According to the
National Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency, Invest India, the
growing consumption of food is expected to reach US$ 1.2 Trillion by 2025-26.
India exports agricultural and horticultural products and processed food to
more than 100 countries with major exports to the United States, the European
Union, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and SAARC countries. India's exports of
agricultural and processed food products totaled US$ 38.49 Billion, during
2018-19.
Therefore, the growing demand for processed food is expected
to serve as a major driving factor in the active and modified atmosphere
packaging market. It is an effective packaging technology that helps maintain
the quality of food or food products, modifying the atmosphere which surrounds
the product within the packaging. The primary purpose of active and modified
atmosphere packaging is to avoid and minimize product degradation that may
occur due to enzymatic and biochemical reactions or microbial actions on the
product. With this, food can preserve its freshness a longer duration without
utilizing other preservation techniques, such as dehydration, freezing,
canning, and other processes.
Thus, the demand for active and modified atmosphere
packaging is increasing owing to the aforementioned factors, driving the active
and modified atmosphere packaging market. For instance, in January 2020, StePac
introduced its latest range of sustainable packaging solutions, perfect for
preserving the freshness and extending the shelf life of pomegranates and their
extracted arils. These solutions are designed to inhibit postharvest microbial
decay and extend the shelf life of extracted pomegranate arils for up to 17
days. However, high development cost and stringent government regulations are some
of the factors that are hindering the growth of the active and modified
atmosphere packaging market.
